How custom work goes
Most pieces take three to five weeks from the first drawing.
-
Bring in what you have
Old rings, a single earring, loose stones. We test and weigh the gold and check every stone for free.
-
A drawing and a price
Within a week, in writing. Change anything you like; nothing is made until you say yes.
-
Try on a model
For a ring, a wax model to try on, so the size and the height are right before it’s cast.
-
Made at the bench
Cast, set and polished here. A third down when you approve the drawing, the rest at pickup.
The Ashdowns
My father, Len Ashdown, opened the shop in 1979 after twelve years at the bench for a jeweler in Rochester. I swept the floor here after school, trained as a bench jeweler, and took over in 2014.
We pay for gold and silver by weight at that morning’s price, on a scale that faces you.

Customer reviews
Four watch batteries in fifteen minutes, and they checked the seals on my husband’s dive watch while I waited.
A prong on my engagement ring had worn flat. Tess rebuilt it and sized the band the same afternoon, and showed me the work under the loupe before I paid.
Our wedding bands were made from my grandfather’s gold. The drawing came back in four days, and the rings were done three weeks before the wedding.
I bring my rings in every few months for the free cleaning, and they check the prongs every time, even with a line at the counter.
A fair price on the appraisal for our insurance, with photos of every piece. Saturday hours end at 2, so go early.
I brought in a shoebox of my late mother’s jewelry with no idea what any of it was. Tess tested the gold, sorted out the costume pieces and told me what was worth insuring.
Common questions
Do you repair jewelry in the shop?
All of it, at our own bench. Chains, clasps and most ring sizing are done while you wait; bigger jobs take three to seven days.
Can you resize a ring?
Most gold, silver and platinum rings, from $45. A band set with stones all the way around, and some tungsten and titanium bands, can’t be sized; bring it in and we’ll tell you.
Do you replace watch batteries?
While you wait, from $15. We also size bands and replace crystals, and a mechanical watch’s service takes about three weeks.
Do you buy gold?
Gold, silver and platinum, paid by weight at that morning’s price. Bring a photo ID.
Can you make a custom piece?
From your own gold and stones, or ours. You get a drawing and a written price first, and most pieces take three to five weeks.
When do I need an appointment?
Only for appraisals and custom work. Repairs, sizing and batteries are walk-in.
Is cleaning free?
Yes, any day we’re open, on whatever you’re wearing. We check the prongs while it’s in the steamer.
Can I put something on layaway?
Anything in the case, with 20 percent down and up to six months to pay. There’s no interest or fee.
How can I pay?
Cash, a check from a local bank, or any major card. Paying by phone works at the counter too.
